Biography
2010 has been a very exciting year for Erik Penny. The American singer-songwriter, who uprooted and moved to Berlin from Los Angeles in late 2008, began his time in Germany by hitting the streets busking, as a way to meet people, make new fans, and sell a couple CDs here and there. It worked.
Playing constantly and tirelessly led to countless shows in Berlin and all over Germany in 2009, plus a few weeks in the studio recording a new long-player, "Bend". The record, Erik's fifth solo release, was engineered and co-produced by Simon Frontzek of the German rock band Tomte, and featured contributions from Mocky (known for his work with Feist and Jamie Lidell) and longtime Natalie Merchant guitarist Gabriel Gordon. In early 2010 Erik and his partners at German indie label Future Pop Stuff released the record, winning over critics and hordes of new fans alike. It also led to spots on larger stages all over Germany, as the invited support act of Milow, Madsen, Ronan Keating, and Runrig. More solo shows, summer festivals in Germany and Switzerland, and 2 full-band tours rounded out a VERY busy year…but it wasn't done yet.
So much time on the road deserves a happy homecoming, so Erik invited an intimate group of friends and hardcore fans into his living room to celebrate with an exclusive house concert. The "Sofa Sessions" (as his wife named their house concert series from LA, before they even had a place for them) had been a regular event since the move to Berlin, and had quickly become an underground legend. Since a live record seemed the next logical step in building his discography, Erik set up the whole band between the TV and the couch, and tape rolled. Stories were told, wine was consumed, and songs old and new were performed in this very unique setting. With the 2011 release "Erik Penny and Band, Live at Sofa Sessions", Erik will once again hit the road to transport the intimate atmosphere of his Berlin flat all over Germany.
But before that, he'll have the chance to gather a few more fans, as German singer-songwriter Phillip Poisel has asked him to join his tour in February and March. 2011 promises to be an even busier year!
