Biography

November 11

The upside down whorl. The current musical industry scene brings up some interesting paradoxes such as: big bands record in big studios, in only a few days, seeking for the spontaneous touch and freshness that time has taken away. In the meantime other still modest musicians like Damien Lott, work for years in their debut album maturing, polishing and purifying it to the exhaustion, where the energy and bravery shine on their own. In a way, Carlos Soler, the name behind these songs is a little bit like the mad scientists of melodies who locks himself in his lab to develop the new formula to bring new light to the world.

3 years ago, Soler decided to shut himself from the world leaving aside everything around him to shape up the new album in his head and was taking away his sleep (as he sings in "Pascua": "sometimes I think it's normal to live without a sleep / I sleep better when I don't try to be happy") and finally shines through the LSD landscape of XTC, the energy a vocal strength of Mathew Sweet and over all shows one of the best performances of rock in Spanish, like a goldsmith polishing his best diamond, like a craftsman filing every detail of his best work, Carlos Soler has created an amazing album, an ambitious creation, full of arrangements with attention to detail bordering sickness. This album needs to be listened to from two different perspectives: what are we listening and how the feast that our ears are tasting has been made. Stop and imagine our interpreter recording voice after voice to reach those beautiful vocal harmonies and background singing like in "Quien soy", the dens clapping in "Pascua", the dozens of tracks for songs like "Erase and fall" or "Fuego amigo", the different layers of instrumental planning (strings, metals, drums) that live in the album, the technique to face such a complicated preparation…something that nowadays only a genius free from the label's establishment can reach. With time as his only limit (and he's got it all), he makes a huge effort to puzzle the pieces that would show new possibilities day by day.

No doubt about this, the most important part is the final result that takes our breath away, and works as a music encyclopaedia where we can listen to The Beatles, The Beach Boys, Led Zeppelin, Hank Williams, Nirvana, Arcade Fire, Weezer…put together as impeccable, unquestionable and perfect singles, with dreamy lyrics that talk about the loneliness found in the process, the loneliness of the ones that dedicate their lives to creation, and finally work as a reflection of the relationship between the artist and his work, including his influences, as it becomes a goal album without even trying to: "Every time I write a song / I become a thief /I hide to not bother anyone / and not talk anymore" as he sings in "Mesa Tormenta"; or as he sings in "Impersonator": :He was an easy diagnose / to any doctor / He had a lot inside / and not bravery at all / if he could take it out in time / it would elevate him two meters above ground".

Who ever said bedroom albums can't sound big? Who ever said that something born in a bedroom couldn't aim for the highest podiums? Damien Lott with a destiny under his wing, well tightened, and he's done it wearing the geniality as a hat, inspiration as a coat and effort as pyjamas. Like the ones who have just returned from a long nocturnal journey through the most hidden landscapes, what do you know, all his memories were with him in that room.
