San Francisco “instrumental hip hop” pioneer DJ Shadow (A.K.A. Josh Davis) is currently touring the globe after releasing the “I Gotta Rokk” EP, which previews tracks from a proper album to be released this fall. Stateside was fortunate enough to catch the iconic Shadow at the recent three-day Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago and has the following review:
DJ Shadow greeted the early evening Pitchfork crowd on day two of the festival before disappearing behind a giant white orb at center stage. Although it was still light out, two projectors bounced video off of the sphere’s exterior for several long minutes before the large screen on the main field flipped to an interior camera input. Damn, the DJ was inside the space globe, manipulating a turntable and mixer! Old-school hip-hop (including snatches from fellow West Coasters, The Pharcyde) and eardrum-piercing bass screamed from the speakers and, to up the wow factor, the orb spun 180 degrees to reveal a cracked eggshell opening and Davis smiling out to the audience.
The “I Gotta Rokk” EP is available on vinyl, CD and as an MP3 download on DJ Shadow’s official Website. He will be on tour in New Zealand and Australia later this month with select dates in the U.S. to follow. The U.K. leg of the tour begins 2 September in County Laois, Ireland.
