The Suzukis - Reasons For Leaving

Ooh this one’s got a scary video. Like some mod’s tea party gone all wrong and ultraviolent. It’s a great track though, neatly demonstrating The Suzukis’ loud approach to punk orientated, angry, laddish, indie rock. “Reasons For Leaving” is the second single taken from their debut album, planned for release later this year.

Scoundrels – Hangman’s Lament

Ahh, the heart warming story of an English boy who posted a demo off to a record company in the states, got heard, got flown over to the states to record an album with a big time producer, and starred in a film, before bringing flying back home to show it off to his friends.

No, not the latest Tom Hanks, Americana driven, family orientated feel good movie, but the story of Ned Wyndham and his band Scoundrels, who ended up recording their debut album with Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies, Manic Street Preachers, Jarvis Cocker etc.), deep in the swamps of Louisiana, and signed to Sire Records.

Shank – DVD release

Set in an urban, distopian 2015 “Shank” is the latest film from director Mo Ali. After a limited cinema release earlier in the year, “Shank” now comes to DVD, released on July 26.

Of his film Mo Ali says, “SHANK takes a satirical look at what life could be like if the government continue to ignore the issues affecting young people today, forcing the next generation to live in a concrete jungle with no real hope. It also shows young people in a different light, just because a kid is in a gang and wearing a hoodie it does not automatically mean he is violent and will “SHANK” you.”

Kid Adrift – Oxytocin EP

Kid Adrift has been described a cross between Muse and Aphex Twin, which is perhaps a clumsy, yet useful, description of his juxtaposition of song and Warpish electronic composition, demonstrated deftly on latest release “Oxytocin EP”, out now.

The accompanying video is well worth a peek, borrowing from Japanese horror flick “Audition”, in a lighthearted Hello Kitty fashion.

The Sword – Warp Riders

Would you like to hear the tale of Ereth, an archer banished from his tribe on the planet Acheron? A planet trapped in a tidal lock, causing one side to be scorched by three suns, and the other enshrouded in perpetual darkness. Of Course you do, right?

Well, this is the story that forms the backdrop of The Sword’s new concept album “Warp Riders” out 24 August 2010. Sounding a bit like Wolfmother, if Wolfmother grew a pair and stopped making music for mobile phone adverts, The Sword have been described as “metal revivalists”, simultaneously managing to charm devout metalheads (they even played with Ozzy Osbourne at the iTunes Music Festival, at the Roundhouse, earlier this month) and Hoxtonites, who can’t work out whether it’s cool or not, and think Black Sabbath is a brand of t-shirts.

Zola Jesus – Stridulum II

Inhabiting the more monochromatic, gothic end of the current revival of heavily reverberant vocals and dream/psychedelic pop is the surprisingly accessible sound of Zola Jesus.

Her debut UK album, confusingly titled “Stridulum II”, is due out in August on Berlin based, indie label Souterrain Transmissions. Magazines as diverse as NME and Vogue Italia have staked their approval, the latter, no doubt seduced by her beguiling, Siouxsie Sioux meets Dario Argento aesthetics. The video (below) for her debut UK single “Night”, out now, demonstrates this nicely.

SOULBOY

Set in 1974, Stoke On Trent, SoulBoy tells the story of 17 year-old Joe McCain (played by rising star, Martin Compston), and his quest to bring some excitement into his life. With a backdrop of power cuts, trouble on the football terraces, and most intriguingly, coach trips to all-nighters at The Wigan Casino, SoulBoy promises to be an entertaining depiction of the Northern Soul scene.

Thomas Tantrum – Free Download

Southampton’s unsigned Thomas Tantrum emerged in 2008, with their eponymous album, and singles such as the very likeable “Work It”, attracting favourable responses with their indie power-pop, including a useful celebrity endorsement from Lily Allen. Now after a spell supporting fellow Southamptonians Band Of Skulls, they’re back with their second as yet untitled album, due out this September.

Mother Mother – UK album release

Perhaps best known in the UK, for bringing us uber cool duos in the shape of Crystal Castles and Fan Death, Toronto based indie label, Last Gang Records’ latest export to the UK are Canadian five-piece, Mother Mother. Sounding like a Venn diagram comparing The Pixies, Abba and the B-52s, Mother Mother’s new album “O My Heart” is out now.

Watch the video for the single “Hayloft” to see what we mean. Vocalist/Guitarist Ryan Guldemond describes it as “Your average tale of barn sex gone terribly awry…”
