Dog Is Dead can not stop making good tracks. In fact, it’s not just that they have a knack for it, they keep getting better and better. It is an absolute pleasure to see a band grow in a few short years and even better that we can plug them. It is not usual that we post about the same band each time they release a new single, but to not do so with these Nottingham lads, well, it would be a crime!

Following on from the success of our Christmas event, headlined by The Horrors ably supported by newcomers Toy, we are positively, stratospheric with excitement that our next event on Friday 17th February, will be curated by Andrew Weatherall. Adapting the ethos of his own A Love From Outer Space club night, the event will see Weatherall Joined on the decks by his ALFOS cohort Sean Johnston, but will also feature some emerging disco-space-rock from Night Angles and Warm Digits (check out their video for “Weapons Destruction” below), picked out by Mr Weatherall himself. There has been an undeniable trend occurring amongst certain musical circles in the last year. Now, this has most likely been happening for a decade or so, but has only really grabbed our attention after a few reviews in the last few months. Perhaps it is snowballing, not out of control, but at a nice enough pace to unify a number of bands in their choice of either samples, or clever synth extractions. We are (If you couldn’t tell by the title or picture) talking about the use of very distinct 90′s game console sounds.

Blue Monday you say? Feeling down for no comprehensible reason? Well…This track may not cure your depressive woes, but stick this in your ears as you walk through the greyish drizzle and it will compliment and enhance your mood, depicting imagery of that slow motion film sequence you always wished you starred in. This is the hypnotic Beatrice Eli with her new mash up ‘The Conqueror vs Underground Kings.

Norwegian synthpop ensemble Casiokids may sing in a language foreign to most British ears, but that didn’t stop us greatly enjoying the whimsical flurries on their debut album “Aabenbaringen Over Aaskammen”, released through Moshi Moshi Records.

It was a sad day when James Murphy announced that LCD-Soundsystem’s 10 year rein over our airwaves was coming to a close. Having giving us three groundbreaking albums and arguably changing the way in which some artists construct and compose their own brand of electronica, they are soon to release onto the world a film documenting the lead up to, and their final gig last April at Madison Square Gardens.

We have had a numerous amount of nostalgic gems posted in our “Tell Us Your Story” competition over the last few months, so much so that it has inspired student Nikki Dixon to create a piece that ties in perfectly with our ethos of great British music and fashion. Produced for her final year uni project, Nikki has collaborated with “Welcome Pariah”, a band that clearly holds Fred Perry close to their hearts.

It’s hard to tell sometimes at gigs, where the bands end, and the fans begin. There is no mistaking however, the presence and surprising austerity that The Horrors hold. Backstage, this restrained charm was virtually non-existent. What can you expect though. When you look that good as a band, the modern epitome for cool for so many, you must follow that persona through. That is until you are hidden from prying eyes. This hard outer shell however, must not be mistaken for high horse syndrome. They are true professionals, constantly striving for perfection, and if Friday nights set was anything to go by, they definitely achieved it. (more…)

Kicking off the second Sub-Sonic Live, a band who are rising to the top of the musical game faster than you can say their acutely short name. TOY have been a band The Horrors have kept close to their hearts over the last year, and it is easy to see why. They have many similarities, be it style or delivery. This is not to say that if you have heard one, you have heard both. They cover a different spectrum of a similar genre, filling the void for what one has left behind. This can only mean one thing if the two were to join forces, and that is a gig that delivers across the board, impenetrable and quite frankly, inspiring. (more…)

The title says it all really. The Drums have released a free download of a remix, by analogue-art-synth champions Add N to (X), of their latest single, “How it Ended”! Why is this such big news? Well, apart from anything else Add N to (X), have been silent since their split in 2003, leaving a huge hole in the new music landscape, so this is a real treat. Read on to find out more.

The 50′s are coming the 50′s are coming! With an overhaul of big budget period TV shows and films infiltrating our screens, it seems appropriate that our airwaves should also have re-imaginings of times past. Now when we say re-imaging, we mean it. Where as these aforementioned TV shows are trying to replicate the exact feel of a time where half the world’s population were not even born, ‘The Minutes‘ are re-working it, giving a spin on what we know, to give us a little something of what we don’t.

Given Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross’s Oscar win for their soundtracking of David Fincher’s “The Social Network”, few upcoming film scores will command as much anticipation as Reznor and Ross’s epic work accompanying David Fincher’s adaptation of “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”. Especially given the web buzz surrounding lead track “Immigrant Song” which features the vocal explosives of Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ Karen O. Read on to find out how to get hold of a free hauntingly atmospheric six track sampler of the three CD album. (more…)

Only a year after their 2010 effort ‘Brothers’, The Black Keys have humbled us with a new offering “El Camino’. We were somewhat sceptical about hearing material, potentially throw away make a quick buck material, riding off the success of their aforementioned album. Silly to think though really, considering the fact they have been growing ever stronger as a band, giving us some really top notch post rock blues for quite some years now. Being fans, as, every music loving person should be, we went into this one, fingers crossed. Ha! We really didn’t need to do this though, as, if you have heard it, we can all be honest in saying, this is their best yet!

Who would have thought that a female Cellist could excite us so much? In fact, it is so good that we felt the need to tell everyone as soon as we could. This artist has appeared seemingly from nowhere and rocked our expectations, making us very glad indeed that we are one of the first to hear Abi Wade’s Dulcet tones, and, well, it has made us feel very special. So, if you are feeling melancholic and in need of something soothing, read on to experience exactly what we mean.

This was the very first Sub-Sonic Live at the Garage in London, an event showcasing the very best in emerging new music and heritage acts. The line-up included our favourite Bristolian producer Hyetal alongside secret act The Invisible, as well as the incredible Factory Floor, in the main room. One room of fresh talent is all well and good, but to showcase Nathan Gregory Wilkins in the Discovery Room along with Phonica Records in the Legends Room, and Arnie from Dollop ensured there was love for the eardrums at every turn.
What can we say about good old Mr. David Corney aka Hyetal? This is a man who will give you all the time in the world. It is obvious to say that music is his passion with an abhorrently good understanding for all things related. We ran into The Invisible backstage, front man Dave holding a presence once only normally associated with aristocracy. His large frame bared no resemblance to his humble and highly amusing manner. This is a band that seems to live for the moment. There were no pre-gig anxieties or gestures of pretensions; these are a group of guys, intelligent and intriguing, a delight to meet. (more…)

It feels appropriate, after last night’s victory against our long unbeaten rivals, that we should praise Sweden for all their aptitudes. They already beat us on looks, fine design, architecture and scenery. Oh, less we forget their tasty cinnamon buns, and now it looks like they are beating us at the music game too! That’s why we are supporting synth mad electro pop outfit, The Sound Of Arrows with their surprisingly adept debut LP, “Voyage”.
