Black n white riot

Episode 5

The fifth documentary in the series focuses on the Punk and Two-Tone subcultures, which kicked off in the UK in the late 1970s. Includes contributions from Viv Albertine and Pauline Black.

Mid 70s Britain is broken. Money and opportunity are scarce, and working class youth are yearning for something exciting, something to smash the status quo with. Punk was rebellious, extreme and covered everything - art, music, literature, fashion. It was the opposite to Mod as it involved dressing down, wanting to scare and create a reaction, rather than dress smart and impress. Clothing shops such as Acme Attractions opened on Kings Road, and in Coventry, strong Jamaican influences from ska, reggae and rocksteady were being mixed with punk and new wave. Jerry Dammers started 2-Tone Records and the Two-Tone subculture was born.

Don Letts - Biography

Don Letts has been joining the countercultural dots for almost forty years, coming to notoriety in London during the late 1970s, running Acme Attractions and introducing an entire generation of punks to reggae as DJ at the Roxy Club. Now, as Fred Perry approaches its 60th anniversary, in 2012, he will celebrate the integral part that the brand continues to play in shaping youth culture.
