Swimming encompass a uniqueness in their music quite like no other. Leaping from genre to genre, they touch on shoegaze ambience flowing into post-punk and glam, a band clearly unperturbed to taking risks. They delve in contrasting tones and textures formulating an atmosphere, comfortably eclectic but still in keeping to melodic brevity.

The band consists of John Sampson, Peter Sampson Andrew Wright, Blake Pearson and Jonathon Spittlehouse. They started when John and Brother Peter went swimming with a friend in Nottingham at the local pool. So animated by the experience the decided to start making music.

The initial intention was to make "atmospheric electronic music". However John discovered even through liking "weird electronic stuff" he also had an interesting and diverse voice, using it to add a soaring euphoria to each track.

A recent shift in articulation to a more post rock/electronic semblance is down to John's immersion of classic 70's soul. "I've started listening to old soul artists like Terry Callier, Shuggie Otis, even Minnie Ripperton - the stuff she did with Rotary Connection like 'I Am The Black Gold Of The Sun' still has melody hooks but it's also got these amazing out-there arrangements. With Swimming, we want to draw on the stranger, more textural stuff we did before, only with soul vocals, and a 'soul' pace and feel".

Their latest single, 'Sun In The Island' gives way to vibrancy. An infectious track with joyful pop hooks and innovative arrangements. It is similar to their other tracks in the way they are about locating the divine in the darkness. "I live in a rough area - last year, my girlfriend got shot at when a bullet came through the window of the taxi she was traveling in... It's a grim, hostile area that's been really affected by the government's cuts. But 'Sun In The Island' is about not allowing your environment to dictate your identity or happiness. You can make better what's outside your door".

One thing that makes Swimming so unique in the presentation of music is their partnership with sonic artist, Dallas Simpson. The band will spend weekends away in the most interesting and serene of locations throughout the UK creating a set-up whereby Simpson, wearing tiny microphones in his ears, can move around the space, between different instrumental sounds to produce truly beautiful and intricate recordings.

Film maker, Simon Ellis is also on-hand to produce fantastic shorts documenting the process of creating these specialist recordings.
